The reason I choose the heap approach in an interview is that it is easier to reason about and implement correctly under pressure. The time complexity is O(n log k) with the heap, and the space complexity is O(k). I would also mention edge cases like duplicates, negative numbers, and k equal to 1 or the full array length.

Before designing it, I would clarify whether I am managing metadata for a distributed file system or a local one. My high-level design would separate metadata from file contents, because metadata needs fast lookup for paths, permissions, and directory structure, while file contents can live in separate storage. I would think about how to handle rename operations, atomic updates, and directory consistency because these are the tricky parts of a file system. The trade-off is between strong consistency and throughput, and for metadata I would usually lean toward stronger guarantees. I would also discuss replication and recovery because metadata corruption would be a serious reliability issue.

I would say I am interested in Microsoft because it combines strong engineering depth with a broad product ecosystem that reaches both consumers and enterprises. I like the idea of working on systems where reliability, scale, and product quality all matter, especially in areas like cloud and developer tools.
