I would say I am drawn to Amazon because the engineering challenges are very grounded in scale, reliability, and customer impact. I also appreciate the leadership principles because they make expectations explicit and give engineers a common language for decision-making. For me, Amazon feels like a place where I could grow by working on hard distributed systems problems and learn from a very high bar for execution. That is the kind of environment where I think I would do my best work.

Before designing it, I would clarify the latency target, the freshness requirements, and whether suggestions are personalized or purely query-based. At a high level, I would store popular prefixes in a fast in-memory structure, likely a trie or a prefix index, and combine that with ranking signals like popularity, recency, and user context. I would keep the read path extremely fast because autocomplete is a latency-sensitive feature, and I would push heavier ranking and model updates offline or asynchronously. The trade-off is between freshness and serving speed, so I would separate the candidate generation step from the ranking step. I would also plan for failure handling, such as falling back to a simpler popularity-based list if personalized ranking is unavailable.

I would first clarify whether the system needs strong consistency at checkout or whether a reservation model is acceptable. My default would be to use inventory reservations with a short TTL, so when a user starts checkout the system temporarily holds stock and then confirms or releases it based on payment completion. I would make the reservation and finalization steps idempotent, because duplicate requests are common in real systems. The trade-off is that strict locking can hurt throughput, while a reservation model introduces complexity around expiration and cleanup. I would also add careful auditing and monitoring so we can detect negative inventory, stale holds, or payment failures quickly.

I would first classify failures into transient and permanent, because retrying everything blindly can make the system worse. For transient failures, I would use exponential backoff with jitter to avoid retry storms, and I would set a clear retry limit so the client does not wait forever. I would also make sure the operation is idempotent, because retries without idempotency can duplicate work. The reason I choose this approach is that reliability is not just about trying again; it is about retrying in a controlled way that does not overload the system.
