I would also harden filesystem permissions and protect secrets so a single account compromise does not become a full-host compromise. Strong host security is mostly disciplined configuration.

I would make secure defaults easy, add automated guardrails in the deployment pipeline, and keep reviews focused on the highest-risk changes. If security feels too slow, teams will bypass it, so the goal is to reduce friction without reducing rigor. Good security engineering helps speed safely, not against it.
